Ceremony of the Christmas Cheeses

Every December, the Royal Hospital Chelsea comes alive with one of Britain’s oldest and most heartwarming food traditions: the Ceremony of the Christmas Cheese. This year marked an incredible 333 years since cheesemakers first began donating to the Chelsea Pensioners, and the 66th official celebration of the event.

We at Calon Wen are proud to join fellow British cheesemakers in supporting this long-standing tradition, honouring both our farmers and the veterans at the Royal Chelsea Hospital.

Honouring a Proud Tradition

The tradition dates back to 1692, when Sir Christopher Wren asked local cheesemongers to donate cheese to the Pensioners. What began as a gesture of winter kindness has grown into a cherished annual celebration of generosity, craftsmanship and gratitude.

This year, British cheesemakers, including us here at Calon Wen, donated around 340kg of cheese. A highlight of the ceremony was seeing Chelsea Pensioner Andy Kay cut the ceremonial Montgomery Cheddar, continuing a ritual that has lasted for centuries.

Why Calon Wen Supports the Ceremony

As a Welsh, farmer-owned co-operative, community lies at the heart of everything we do. Supporting the Ceremony of the Christmas Cheese feels like a natural extension of our values.

For us, the event is about:

  • Honouring tradition and heritage
  • Showing gratitude to the Chelsea Pensioners
  • Championing British dairy excellence
  • Coming together in kindness and generosity

Taking part is a simple but meaningful way for us to give back, stay connected to our roots, and help keep this remarkable tradition alive.

Cheese, Community and Carrying Traditions Forward

As the celebrations came to a close, we were reminded of the power of food to bring people together. We’re proud to play our part in this century-spanning tradition and look forward to supporting the Ceremony of the Christmas Cheese for many years to come.
